Graham Cook – “The Craft Of Thatching Now And Then”

The talk starts with a brief look at the trade today, materials used and methods of thatching. Then it covers how the various thatching materials are and were harvested and prepared both today and in the past. A quick look at some tools and how they are used, followed by a section on types of work no longer seen.

Graham practiced the craft in this area for around 30 years, along with jobs in Wales, Ireland and Virginia. After some health issues he ceased work and in time created a website dedicated to all aspects of thatching. He gets feedback from all over the world, with a wide variety of requests; often from academics and students. The site is now probably the largest in the world.
