Shaftesbury & Gillingham u3a is an organisation for retired and semi-retired people living in the surrounding areas. We aim to bring people together for sharing experience, leisure, fitness and fun. We have over three hundred members and over thirty active groups, covering a huge range of interests. Each of the groups are run by a volunteer leader; any of our members can set up a group and become a group leader, as long as the chosen activity is suited to the aims of the u3a.
It is easy to join sgu3a. All you need to do is either:
a) Complete our online membership form (via this link ) or
b) Download (via this link), print and and complete our paper form.
Details of membership fees and where to send the paper form are on the forms. Our basic annual membership fee (August-July) is only £12.00.
You will then be free to join as many or as few groups as you wish. See our Groups page for information on all our groups, which groups have vacancies, and whom to contact if you have an idea for a new group.
Existing Members should go to our renewals page via this link.
Monthly Meetings are held on the first Thursday of the month at
The New Remembrance Hall, Charlton, Shaftesbury, SP7 0PL
The 29 bus service from Shaftesbury to Salisbury stops in Charlton near to the hall, follow this link for the current timetable.
A charge is made of £2 per person, to cover speakers' costs and refreshments. Open meetings provide an opportunity to have a coffee, socialise and to enjoy presentations from invited speakers. Non-members are welcome to attend one open meeting to sample what is on offer.
We are a very friendly group, so if you want to come along to the monthly meeting and see what we are all about then contact Helen Warley our "Meeter and Greeter" who will explain all and ensure you will have a warm welcome (you can send a message to Helen on the contacts page).
Some of our activities are free, while others make a small charge to cover the cost of room hire. Outings and theatre visits are costed to cover transport, entrance fees, ticket, etc. We always aim to keep charges as low as possible. For further details check the groups.
We publish a newsletter each month except August and January. This is emailed free of charge to all members who have provided an email address. For a small fee a printed copy may be collected at a monthly meeting or posted to members. For past issues of the ‘In Touch’ newsletters click on the ‘In Touch’ button at the top of the page.
