Shaftesbury & Gillingham

Natural History

The sgu3a Natural History Group is a small band of people enthusiastic about nature. We are a mix of near beginners and some with a degree of expertise who all enjoy hearing about many kinds of wildlife. Some just want to discover nearby nature reserves, others just like to ‘walk and talk’ in interesting surroundings. We regularly observe birds, wildflowers, butterflies, trees, moths, grasses, bees, fungi, dragonflies and other aspects of the natural world.

Most of our meetings are outdoors and are usually local and planned to be accessible for all. There is inevitably an emphasis on identifying species, some in the group having enough expertise to help others, and we occasionally invite a specialist to inspire us to explore further. We also like to visit sites of special conservation management.

We meet on the 2nd Wednesday of each month, 10am to usually about 12.30. We are a very sociable group so visits are often followed by coffee or lunch.

Our programme may be displayed here, or on the "Events" Page

The Group is led by Janet Fenton who is also our membership contact. Do get in touch with her for more information about our group. If you’d like to join a field trip to see if this group is your sort of thing, please get in touch with Janet for more details. You may send a message to Janet via the "Leader" link below.
